As the vegetation (population of plants in a certain location) is supporting our surrounding nature, its management is indispensable for the realization of our comfortable lives, so control of weeds is one of the important issues. Vegetation section has been extracting the issues relating to vegetation and exploring management policies and technologies that are safe and sustainable in harmony with the culture and our lives, through multi-sided analyses of regional vegetation. Also, it has been carrying out studies to elucidate the invasion mechanism of “hardly controllable weeds” and to develop their control methods from the perspective of field science.
Because of the high economic growth period, the increase of abandoned farmland and decrease of firewood forest have helped the increase of suitable habitat of wildlife across the country. As a result, the distribution area of Japanese deer, wild boar, and other wildlife have rapidly recovered so that agriculture forestry damage has occurred in many places. In addition, alien species’ invasion has been promoted by the development of economic activities on a global scale, which has become a major challenge in advancing the conservation of natural ecosystems. In order to eliminate these conflicts between wildlife and people, both basic fields including population ecology and applied research including wildlife management and ecosystem conservation in the wild wildlife management department have been studied and used.
In the countryside of Japan, people appeal to the nature and live in harmony with it. There, culture and tradition born from various wisdom and techniques to survive from the harsh natural environment have created a secondary natural environment. However, because of aging and the progress of population outflow to the city, as well as the change of industrial structures, resource usage in the countryside has stagnated and the biological community has also been changed.
While communicating aggressively with the countryside which is very different from the past, Satoyama Management Section has been studying a society system that can promote the sustainable usage and strategies for using regional resources including the residents, so as to promote the education and regional contribution activities based on this achievement.
